ADA Requirements for Handicap Accessible Residential Doors

Width and Height 

According to the standards as outlined by the ADA, the door opening must clear a width of at least 32 inches and have a maximum width of 48 inches. This is the measurement between the face region of the door and the stop area of the frame when the door is opened at a 90° angle.

If there are any type of projections that are located on the face region of the door, they should not be lower than the first 34 inches, coming up from the floor or the ground. Additionally, the projections must not extend out more than a total of 4 inches from the door’s surface. 

Door Hardware 

When installing a handicap accessible door within the home, you should ensure that you adhere to the following ADA requirements regarding the hardware associated with the door:

  1. All of the latches, handles, pulls, and locks must be in a shape that is easy to grab with just one hand. Additionally, they must not include any operational components that result in the twisting of the wrist, having to grab tightly, etc. to open. 
  2. If the door is a sliding door, the operational-based hardware components must be exposed on both sides and completely accessible/usable from both sides. 
  3. The hardware that is required for the handicap accessible door must not be mounted higher than a total of 48 inches above the floor in which the door comes into contact with. 
  4. The threshold associated with handicap accessible doors much not be any higher than ¾ of an inch high on all sliding doors and ½ inch for other types of doors. 
  5. If there are any types of changes in the level of a threshold, a ramp must be installed. The clearance located at the area where the door is installed cannot have a slope that is higher than that of 1:48.
