Do I Need to Adjust and Oil the Bifold Doors in My Home?

If you have bifold doors in your home, it may – eventually – come to a point where you have to adjust and oil the hardware associated with the product. In most instances, adjustments are needed when the operation of the door starts to decline.

Oiling or lubrication becomes necessary when the hardware associated with the product starts to make noise or starts to stick – or become difficult to open. The good news is, adjustments and the process of oiling bifold doors are exceptionally easy tasks.

Adjustments to the Pivot Pin at the Top of the Door

At the top of your door is a track with a clip in it. This is where the top pivot pin is located, in close proximity to the door jamb. The clip contains a screw. You will need to loosen the screw in order to adjust the top of the bifold door closer or farther away from the frame – depending on your needs. Once it is where you want it, simply tighten the screw.

The Bottom Door Pivot Pin Adjustment

The bottom pin of a bifold door is set up in much the same way as the pivot pin located at the top of the door. The only real difference is that the bottom is located within a clip that is toothed. To adjust, simply lift the door and move as needed.

One thing that you should be aware of is the fact that the top pivot pin will need to be loose when making adjustments to the bottom door pivot pin. It may take more than one person if the top is loose and the bottom must be adjusted. You may also hire a specialist to perform these adjustments.

Oiling Bifold Door Hardware

If the bifold doors in your home are making noises or seem to be getting stuck, it is likely time for lubrication. The working or moving parts of a bifold door include pivot pins, hinges, and rollers. If it is time to oil these components, you should use a high-quality lubricant that contains silicone.

Simply Spray these components and work the door back and forth. If you add the right amount, you will find that you will not have to lubricate often. If you are not comfortable with this task, you may hire a professional to come in and oil the working parts of the bifold door.
